Follow-up of the Internal displaced Persons in Democratic Republic of Congo

During the reporting period, IOM conducted training on the methodology and tools of the DTM Displacement Tracking Matrix for its operational partners AIDES and CARITAS. The training aimed to strengthen the capacity of partners to collect data on population movements.

IOM's Health and Migration Division continues to collect data on population flows in selected POE / POCs in North Kivu. Since 19 August, 15 data collectors have been assigned to POE / POCs in Mubambiro, Grande Barrière and Goma Airport. The information collected during this exercise is used to better understand the nature, volume, direction and migration factors in the area affected by Ebola and its surroundings.

IOM also organized a two-day training on integrating protection for government officials, implementing partners and IOM staff. The training aims to ensure the integration of protection in CCCM, DTM, Shelter, WASH and health interventions. Similar training is planned for partners in Ituri province.

During the reporting period, the IOM WASH Unit, together with its site management partner AIDES, conducted a hygiene needs assessment in 11 displacement sites in North Kivu, including Kibabi Buporo. , Kibabi police, Kasenyi, Katale, Katoyi, Bushani, Kabizo, Kanaba, Rushashi, Kiwimba and Muheto. IOM is currently analyzing the needs and resources available to meet these needs.

Following cholera outbreaks, including 16 confirmed cases, at the Kaseke (Tanganyika) site, IOM gave IDPs 20 kg of soap powder and 200 kg of lime to keep their hygienic facilities clean. In addition, IOM has held hygiene awareness sessions aimed at improving hand-washing practices. 7,883 displaced persons attended this training.

Between 26 and 31 August, CCCM teams organized a joint mission (IOM, Civil Protection and AIDS) in the Mahagi territory (Ituri) to identify all IDP sites, assess the humanitarian situation and the needs of IDPs inside and outside the sites. The mission contacted local authorities to gather information on movement flows in their jurisdictions, organize focus groups for collecting protection information and to evaluate the possibility of establishing a Community Information Center (CCI).

In the Kasai and Kasai-Central provinces, IOM continues to provide transport assistance to Congolese expelled from Angola. To reinforce its assistance in central Kasai, six additional vehicles from Kananga have been deployed to Tshikapa.

During the same period, 1,320 people (348 households) benefited from transportation assistance. Since January 2019, a total of 11,746 people (5,872 women and 6,417 men) have benefited from this assistance.

On 23 August, UNHCR signed a tripartite agreement with the Government of the DRC and the Government of Angola on the voluntary return of Congolese refugees from Angola. UNHCR requested IOM support for transport assistance.

On 27 August, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), the IOM Head of Mission, UNHCR Representative, and the Governor of Kasai Central exchanged views on the issue of the return of Congolese refugees from Angola.
