MSF extends Support to Livingstone Hospital for Another Month amid COVID-19 Surge in Nelson Mandela Bay

Hospital admissions have continued rising for a longer period compared to previous waves. MSF is no substitute for a functioning health system and calls on the Eastern Cape health department to urgently address leadership and medical staff gaps to avert unnecessary deaths, system collapse in future COVID-19 waves. To prevent system collapse in Livingstone Hospital as the number of people infected with COVID-19 continue to rise in the Eastern Cape’s Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, we are calling on the hospital’s senior leadership team to ensure that sufficient doctors and nurses are made available to staff the hospital’s primary COVID-19 ward, which our MSF team has supported since 29 June, on a sustained basis. The incident which happened on the 26 of August 2011 claimed the lives of 23 UN employees and civilians and left over 60 people injured. At a solemn event in Abuja, the United Nations (UN) System in Nigeria held a commemorative ceremony to honor victims of terrorist attack on UN facilities 10 years ago.  The incident which happened on the 26 of August 2011 claimed the lives of 23 UN employees and civilians and left over 60 people injured.  What started as a normal working day at the UN House on Friday 26 August 2011 quickly turned into a disaster as a suicide car bomber ran into the building with a powerful blast destroying the lower floors of the building and killing 26 people out of which 23 were UN staff.
