The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing $5 million in additional humanitarian assistance to support people affected by unprecedented flooding in Nigeria. Today’s announcement builds on USAID’s initial support of $1 million in life-saving aid provided following the devastating floods. The unusually heavy rainfall and resulting flooding in mid-August affected more than 4.4 million people across the country. The floods displaced at least 2.4 million people, destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, and damaged more than 1.6 million acres of farmland. More than 660 people lost their lives. With this new funding, USAID partners will reach more than 225,000 people in seven highly affected states with critical aid, including emergency shelter, water and sanitation to protect against water borne diseases, hygiene kits

Never Underestimate the Importance of the Geoscience Companies in Africa in 2023 (By NJ Ayuk)

This very public proclamation was made amid a seemingly endless stream of calls by Western voices and environmental activists to halt in Africa to support global zero-emission goals. By NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman, African Energy Chamber. It didn’t surprise me when TGS, the Norwegian seismic data company, announced last May that it would work with National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) to reprocess more than 5,100 square kilometers of 3D seismic data captured in the offshore Liberian basin. After all, the company has a 20-plus year history working in west Africa. TGS has helped countries strengthen their petroleum laws and supported authorities’ efforts to promote licensing rounds and farm-outs. But the comments from one TGS leader struck me. In a simple sentence, the remarks from Executive Vice-President, Eastern Hemisphere Will Ashby, expressed both pride in the company’s African involvement and the company’s steadfast promise to continuing their work on the continent.    “TGS has b

Independents Energy Companies are Raring to Go in Africa in 2023 with Sustainable Energy Development (By NJ Ayuk)

Image
They’re bringing private capital, experience, and know-how to the continent. By NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman, African Energy Chamber. In late 2019, Africa Oil Corp. President and CEO Keith Hill told Petroleum Economist that, given Africa’s unproven oil and gas basins, the continent was probably “the greatest frontier,” with outstanding opportunities for exploration, production, and development companies, including independents. Three years later, Hill remains bullish about Africa, and Canada-headquartered Africa Oil Corp. is driving oil and gas exploration here. The company is part of a growing trend we’re seeing: independent oil and gas companies that recognize the tremendous promise of our underexplored continent and are finding ways to thrive here — and make a positive impact. I’m extremely optimistic about independents like Africa Oil Corp and BW Energy, which are building on their successful track records in exploration and production, and Perenco, which is building Africa’s natura
