IOM activities in the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of Congo DRC
Approximately 5,038,498 travelers were screened in IOM-supported POEs / POCs and 5,019,323 people reportedly used hand washing facilities available in POE / POCs. Front-line providers reported 242 alerts, of which 90 were validated by WHO / MoH investigator teams.
Of the validated cases, no EVD case was confirmed. In these Checkpoints, IOM provides support through medical screenings, handwashing services, contact tracing, risk communication, community engagement, and population flow monitoring. Between August 26 and 31, 11 new POCs were operational in South Kivu, including seven in Bukavu and four in Mwenga. The goal is to strengthen prevention against Ebola.
In partnership with the Ministry of Health and the PNHF, IOM continues to support the implementation of Ebola surveillance and prevention activities in 108 POE / POCs in North Kivu, Ituri and, recently, in the South-Kivu. To prevent the spread of the epidemic in the HZs not affected by the disease, IOM is supporting 9 additional POE / POCs at Tshopo (2), Tanganyika (2), Kinshasa (2), Upper Katanga (1), Maniema ( 1) and Kasai Central (2).
There are currently 29 outbreaks (SZ) affected by the outbreak, of which 18 currently have active transmission (ie, confirmed cases of EVD in the last 21 days). Despite considerable efforts, the answer remains difficult in many respects. POE / POC are particularly vulnerable due to insecurity and access issues.
From August 16 to 31, 223 front-line providers (66 women and 157 men) from South Kivu, Kasindi and 34 Beni received basic training on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at POE / POC, and identification and management of EVD cases. The new standard medical screening procedures (SOPs) provide more sensitive case definition criteria, based on either fever, signs of Ebola disease or exposure to a possible EVD case.
An alert is defined as any traveler with a temperature above 38 ° C and / or with visible symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea.
