The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo visited the International Monetary Funds Head Office in United States of America



The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo visited the International Monetary Funds Head Office in United States of America on Wednesday (March 3) to discuss the African countries economic priorities.

President Felix Tshisekedi was warmly greeted by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, and they spent an hour together in closed door discussions.

“We discussed the importance of the government taking bold actions to boost revenue, improve governance, and protect social spending, while limiting expenditure to available resources,” said Georgieva in a statement following the meeting.



It should be noted that previousely a team of the IMF services, led by Mauricio Villafuerte, stayed in Kinshasa from 19 to February 25 to discuss the evolution of the program of reference approved in December 2019. 

The Objective of this mission was to update the macroeconomic framework and to discuss the conclusions of the recent evaluation of the safeguards of the central bank. At the exit of the visit, Mr. Villafuerte made the following statement:

"A preliminary evaluation suggests that all the quantitative objectives and structural reference of the SMP (Program of reference) at the end of December were reached. The first and second reviews of the program of reference will be combined and formally led to May".



"In 2019, inflation in annual slip remained contained to 4,6% and the rate of relatively stable exchange. On the other hand, the growth slowed down to 4,4% against 5,8% in 2018, mainly because of the fall of the mining production" added Mr. Villa fuerete.

The mission discussed the conclusions of the evaluation of the safeguards of the Bank of Congo with the authorities, exhorting them to take account of the recommendations of this evaluation with the technical aid of the partners of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
 

"The mission met President Tshisekedi, Prime Minister Ilunga Minister, Minister in charge of Finance Sele, the Governor of the BCC Mutombo, as well as many other high governmental persons in charge, representatives of the private sector and international community present in Kinshasa.
