The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau has met today 30 May 2020 with the Permanent Representatives of the United Nations Group of African States regarding Canada's bid to serve on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in 2021-2022.

The Canadian Prime Minister spoke with appreciation of the warm welcome he received during his visit to Ethiopia and Senegal in February, where he attended the events of the African Union Summit and met with African leaders.

He highlighted Canada's strong relationships with African countries, which are based on shared values, the close economic and trade ties that unite them, and the potential for increased partnerships and growth.

The Prime Minister of Canada has reiterated Canada’s commitment to act productively and collaboratively as a member of the UNSC and to work with partners to address complex global issues.

He cited the challenge posed by the COVID-19 pandemic as an example, and stressed that multilateral cooperation is essential to address the health and economic impact of the pandemic.

He also highlighted the central role of the United Nations and the African Union in the international response.

He highlighted the important contributions that African leaders have made to the High-Level Event on Financing for Development during COVID-19 and beyond, which was convened by Canada, Jamaica and the United Nations on May 28.

Justin Trudeau recognized the important role that African countries play in the consolidation and maintenance of peace around the world. He also mentioned Canada's contributions to world peace and security, including as chairman of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2020, as a contributor to the peacekeeping mission of the UN in Mali in 2019 and co-director of the Elsie Initiative for the Participation of Women in Peace Operations - alongside Zambia, Ghana and Senegal, among others.

The Prime Minister Trudeau pledged to continue the close collaboration between Canada and the countries of Africa to promote our common goals of peace and security.

The Prime Minister of Canada and permanent representatives exchanged views on other important international issues, including the fight against climate change, gender equality, economic security and the strengthening of multilateralism.

They discussed the role Canada can play in bringing these priorities to the forefront of the discussions at the United Nations Security Council.

As Canada continues to run for the United Nations Security Council in 2021-2022, we will continue to advance our common interests for the benefit of people and businesses in Canada and around the world.
