Angola: AfDB commits $ 1 million to two research projects on Covid-19

The African Development Bank has committed $ 1 million in funding from an ongoing project for science and technology development for two research projects for the mitigation of the novel coronavirus in Angola.

The Science and Technology Development Project, which is executed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, aims to contribute to the economic diversification of Angola through scientific and technological research and through the promotion of an innovative enabling environment.

The Angolan government intends to promote research and strengthen health capacities, in a context marked by the Covid-19 pandemic. The first research project focuses on the epidemiological, clinical and laboratory profile of Covid-19. It will receive support of $ 431,590. The second relating to capacity building in the face of the coronavirus will have support of $ 613,029.

Funding agreements between the coordinator of the project implementation unit, Ricardo Queirós, and the principal researchers; Fernanda Dias, professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Agostinho Neto University, and Joana Afonso, Director General of the National Institute for Health Research were signed during a ceremony held on Monday, July 20, in Luanda, in videoconference by the Angolan Ministry of Higher Education.

These projects integrate benchmark research entities from Brazil, Portugal, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The Project is also carried out in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Angolan Minister of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Maria Bragança Sambo, reaffirmed her commitment to support the efforts of the Ministry of Health through an approach entitled "One Health", intended to strengthen research on the new coronavirus.

The Director of the African Development Bank's Angola Country Office, Joseph Ribeiro, who attended the ceremony by video conference, praised the Angolan government's efforts in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. "The results of scientific research will contribute to the production of new knowledge about the virus, while strengthening national capacities in terms of staff training and availability of laboratory equipment for the health sector," said Joseph Ribeiro , by underlining the importance of these research projects which benefit from the support of the Bank.

He also commended the significant participation of women researchers in the coordination and composition of the project teams, which is in line with the objectives of the project financed by the African Development Bank. According to the World Health Organization, Angola had 779 confirmed cases of coronavirus as of July 21, including 221 people cured and 30 deaths, which represents one of the highest death rates in southern Africa.

Angolan authorities have established a state of "public calamity" since May 26, 2020, after ending the state of emergency.
