Discussions between the French Ambassador in the DRC and the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development

The French Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, François Pujolas with Claude Nyamugabo Bazibuhe, DRC Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development 

France supports the preservation of biodiversity on a global scale and renews its support for the preservation of the basin Congo forester.

The French Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, François Pujolas, spoke on September 29, 2020 with Claude Nyamugabo Bazibuhe, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development have had fruitful discussion during an exchange which is part of the establishment of the Coalition of High Ambition for Nature and Peoples, a grouping of countries for which France is at the initiative with Costa Rica. 

The aim of this coalition is to support the inclusion of a target to protect at least 30% of the planet (land and sea) by 2030 in the future strategic framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity, which will be adopted in 2021 at COP15 in Kunming. The ambassador de France en DRC recalled the paramount place of the environment in bilateral cooperation between France and the DRC: “We hope that the DRC can support with us this common ambition for the planet. This is an initiative that is consistent with that on the preservation of tropical forests, which benefits from the strong support of the DRC and the President Tshisekedi ”. 

The coalition also aims to carry more general messages of ambition during negotiations such as the adoption a robust implementation and transparency mechanism, the adequate mobilization of financial resources in favor of conservation and preservation measures, as well as the promotion of the biodiversity-climate link through the promotion of nature-based solutions. 

This meeting also provided the opportunity to take stock of the progress of the roadmap for the forestry sector, concluded last December between the Congolese government and the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI), which France then held the presidency - https://cd.ambafrance.org/La-France-s-engage-aux-cotes-de-la-RDC-dans-une- roadmap-for-"I would like to salute the leadership of the Minister and the commitment of all administrations Congolese women on this issue. We can see with the progress made in the forestry sector, in particular with the process well advanced reform of the national forest policy. The sustainable forest management program, led by AFD, will be at the heart of this policy in the years to come ", welcomed the French Ambassador to the DRC.
