Taking care of your skin, even with the mask

The mask is one of the essential accessories in all circumstances and in all places. How to continue to take care of your skin, under the mask? Can certain types of masks cause skin irritation? Here are some observations and tips.

Protective masks and skin health

Gradually, wearing a mask is becoming compulsory everywhere and all the time, in closed public places, but also increasingly in open public spaces. The fragile skin of the face is therefore in regular or even permanent contact with the mask intended to protect the population against the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

According to dermatologists, the need to wear a mask is paramount, compared to the risks of skin irritation and discomfort associated with recurrent contact with the mask. Even for patients with skin diseases, it is essential to protect yourself and others by respecting barrier gestures. With the mask, several areas of the face may be affected by tingling and redness:

The nose ;

The chin ;

Cheeks ;

The back of the ears.

A cloth mask rather than a surgical mask

Several factors related to wearing a mask can cause or worsen skin problems:

Frictions;

The heat ;

Perspiration ;

The humidity.

These factors can induce an imbalance of the skin flora, itching and an inflammatory reaction. People with skin diseases (psoriasis, acne, eczema, impetigo, atopic dermatitis, etc.) are particularly exposed to this type of reaction. Choosing the right type of mask can help minimize skin irritation. In fact, fabric masks, preferably completely white, are generally better tolerated than surgical masks, which contain chemicals capable of causing allergic reactions.

Favor soft and moisturizing cosmetics

To prevent skin problems, it is more than ever advisable to take care of your skin, before and after wearing the mask. Mild products, based on mineral or thermal water are preferred, while products containing perfumes, essential oils or alcoholic derivatives should be avoided. To preserve the skin barrier, good skin hydration is essential, before wearing the mask. At the same time, it's best to avoid makeup products, which can clog skin pores and increase maceration under the mask.

For men, the ideal is to avoid a beard, which poses two problems:

Improper positioning of the mask on the face; An increased risk of infection or inflammation of the hair follicles.

In case of irritation or skin problems associated with wearing the mask, a healing cream can be applied to the skin to relieve the itching and heal the skin lesions. The mask should be changed more often, ideally every two hours.
