Merck Foundation has celebrated the World Cancer Day with The First Ladies of Africa and the Ministries of Health by strengthening cancer care and increasing the limited number of oncologists in their country. 

• Merck Foundation writing history in Africa by training the first African oncologists and the intake teams in charge of cancer in Gambia, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Liberia, Guinea Conakry, Central African Republic, Chad and Niger. 

• Merck Foundation, in collaboration with Les Premieres African Ladies and Ministries of Health, strengthen cancer care capacity in Africa by offering one, two and three year scholarship programs, a master's and a diploma to 70 African doctors of 24 countries to be the first oncologists trained and first multidisciplinary care teams cancer in their country. 

Merck Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, in partnership with African First Ladies and Ministries of Health, celebrates "World Cancer Day 2021" on the theme " I am and I will ” through their cancer care access program in order to strengthen cancer care and management capacities in the aim to increase the limited number of oncologists across the continent. 

Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, Most African Influential (2019 and 2020) and African Woman of the Year 2020 has stressed: “We at Merck Foundation strive to make highly competent African health professionals and fully self-employed by providing the best multidisciplinary training in oncology and cancer care to young doctors across Africa. I am delighted with our success in reshaping and improving care anticancer drugs in the public sector, and thus to have increased the limited number of oncologists by more than 70 new oncologists to be the first in 24 countries. And to form a multidisciplinary care team in oncology in many countries consist of; Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Radiation oncology, Nurse, Pathologist and Radiology technician. We are definitely writing history in Africa by training the first oncologists and the first treatment teams cancer burden in many countries such as; Gambia, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Liberia, Guinea Conakry, Central African Republic, Chad and Niger. Our main goal is to provide quality and equitable care to patients who had never had anyone to take care of them before".

The First Lady of Burundi, H.E. Madame ANGELINE NDAYISHIMIYE said: “I am very happy that as part of our partnership, Merck Foundation offers specialized training at the very first oncologist from Burundi. We will recruit more doctors in the batches to come in various specialties of oncology, in order to constitute a qualified team capable of improving access to cancer care from quality and fair in the country. I applaud the unique efforts of Merck Foundation in this regard, this is the first time that we have received this type of support that helps us to have our own specialists ”. 

The First Lady of Zimbabwe, H.E. Ms. AUXILLIA MNANGAGWA has underlined: "Merck Foundation will provide valuable specialist training in oncology to young Zimbabwean doctors. We are very enthusiastic because it will allow health professionals in our country acquire advanced training and medical expertise in health care oncology. This will help the people of our country to fight this death pathology ”. 

Launched in 2016, the “Merck Cancer Access Program” offers one, two and three scholarship, master's and degree programs years for African doctors in India, Egypt, Kenya and Malaysia. 

Merck Foundation also recently introduced a post diploma 2-year online academic in cancer and clinical UK.

Merck Foundation, through its Merck Cancer Access Program, has trained day more than 70 oncologists (in addition to 10 doctors in training) from 24 countries which are: Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, CAR, Chad, DRC, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, South Africa, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
