Summit on positive masculinity in Kinshasa

The President of the DRC, Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, current President of the African Union, opened yesterday Thursday November 25, 2021, the Summit on positive masculinity in Kinshasa, in the presence of Presidents Macky Sall of Senegal, Nana Akufuo of Ghana , Denis Sassou Nguesso from the Republic of Congo, Faure Gnassingbé from Togo, Paul Kagame from Rwanda as well as Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Honorary President of Sierra Leone. Personalities from the associative world and businessmen also take part. 

The Heads of State and Government, as well as the various parties, thus addressed issues related to gender and at the end of these meetings, adopted a final declaration, as a commitment of men and particularly of illustrious participants, containing strategies to lead to concrete actions to put an end to violence against women and girls. 

The President of Rwanda said he was satisfied to participate in this meeting which brings together African Presidents to focus on issues that affect the African continent. 

"I thank President Tshisekedi for the invitation to attend this High Council on Gender, violence against women and girls for the role of men in the fight against violence against women and girls. Africa will be involved. But what is also important is our permanent dialogue on cooperation between the two countries which is important for peace, development and security not only in his country but also in the region and abroad ”, said Paul Kagame. 

He added: "The invitation to this meeting comes at the right time to discuss the cooperation between our countries, the DRC and Rwanda as brothers". 

Organized under the high patronage of the President of the Republic and current President of the African Union Félix Tshisekedi, this conference focused on four essential points namely: Sexual violence, limited access to land and other resources as well as the participation of women in decision-making positions. "Galvanizing positive masculinity to put an end to the scourge of violence in Africa" ​​was one of the objectives pursued by this meeting.

The First Vice-President of the Africa Union and the next President of the AU in February 2022, Macky Sall called on African heads of state to use their weight to end violence against women. This inaugural conference is part of the launch of the 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence. 

"In Africa these scourges (violence against women) persist in this 21st century and it is happy that the president of the African Union Félix Tshisekedi is champion was called here in Kinshasa so that we can weigh with all our weight to put an end to these violence against women and especially work for their empowerment (...) ”, he said during a brief address to the press. 

It should be noted that Macky Sall is the first vice-president of the Africa Union. He will take the head of this regional organization in February 2022. 

This Summit was organized as part of the launch of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
