Salhe-Work Zewde, President of the Democratic and Federal Republic of Ethiopia arrived in Kinshasa on Tuesday for bilateral and regional consultations with the President of the Republic, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo. 

She was greeted when she got off the plane at Ndjili International Airport by the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marie Tumba Nzeza, accompanied by the Ambassador of Ethiopia to the DRC, and the Ambassador from the DRC to Ethiopia, Ngandu-Ilunga. 

Responding to a question from the press, Salhe-Work Zewde said, “The Democratic Republic of Congo is a second country for me. I have known this country for almost three decades; so it's a homecoming. I came to see my younger brother so that I could discuss matters of mutual, bilateral and regional interest. So these are consultations that we do regularly. It is with great pleasure that I am here. Thank you mingi ”. 

Born February 21, 1950 in Addis Ababa, Sahle-Work Zewde has proven to be a seasoned diplomat. Stateswoman, President of the Republic since October 25, 2018, she is the first woman to hold this office in Ethiopia. She was born on February 21, 1950 in Addis Ababa. 

She is the eldest of four daughters. She studied at the Franco-Ethiopian high school Guébré-Mariam, then moved to France at the age of seventeen. She graduated in natural sciences from the University of Montpellier, and is fluent in Amharic, English and French. 

She was Ambassador to Senegal from 1989 to 1993, also accredited to Mali, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia and Guinea. From 1993 to 2002, she was Ambassador to Djibouti, and represented Ethiopia on the Intergovernmental Authority for Development. 

She was Ambassador to France from 2002 to 2006, also accredited to Tunisia and Morocco and permanent representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). From June 2009 to March 2011, she was Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in the Central African Republic.

She was then Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to the African Union from June 28, 2018. She succeeds Haile Menkerios.

She was unanimously elected President of the Republic in the presidential election on October 25, 2018, following the resignation of Mulatu Teshome.

She is the first woman elected to this post, and, at the time of her election, the only female head of state on the African continent.
