The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Félix-Tshisekedi Tshilombo and his counter part Paul Kagame, the President of Rwanda had a meeting of nearly two hours, this Friday.

Upon his arrival in Rwanda this afternoon, the DRC Head of State was greeted at the Corniche de Rubavu by President Paul Kagame.

In the city center, a large crack in the ground destroyed several residential houses and some public buildings.

No statement was made to the press after this interview.

The two heads of state will meet again for a second bilateral meeting, this time on Congolese soil, in Goma.

On Saturday, 26 June 2021, President Kagame will reciprocate the working visit where he will be received by President Tshisekedi in DRC’s City of Goma. The two Heads of State will visit areas damaged by the Nyiragongo volcanic eruption on the Congolese side of the border before holding bilateral talks. Delegations from both nations will sign bilateral agreements to further strengthen the DRC-Rwanda diplomatic ties.

Rwanda and DRC ties have boosted ties in recent years evident in growing trade, security and social economies ties.

DRC has also expressed interest to be a member of the regional bloc currently comprising Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and Tanzania.

A verification team has since been appointed by the EAC Council of Ministers and is currently in DR Congo for 10 days to assess the vast country’s suitability to be admitted into the Community.

The two Presidents toured Rubavu / Gisenyi, a neighboring town of GOMA also affected by the earthquakes caused by the volcanic eruption of Nyragongo on May 22.
